Everybody Loves Raymond

My second time volunteering for Kids Club. This time the kids were much less rowdy, specifically two boys Gregor and Mikey (from my groups are ages 9-10 or classes 4/5). You know things go pretty smoothly where we calm the kids down with sweet snack, patiently ask them to be seated, follow the teachers in body worship. Then we have them repeat Genesis 1-22 on the slides. At this point a few of them are just in complete distractions. They are all volunteered by their parents to be here for two hours but to some of them, "it's like prison!"

Mikey and Gregor are best friends. How do I know? Gregor told me after I asked them what were their favorite Christmas gifts were.

Gregor: I got a new Nintendo game from Mikey. It's my favorite cuz his my best friend.

Mikey is sort of the leader among my group. You could tell. All the kids wanted his attention. He's a sweet kid until he has...well too many sweets. And so I find myself getting impatient with the boys and you know using my sternest voice I'd tried to tell them to behave. To no avail.

Everybody Loves Raymond (Even at Ponderosa)

A mini disaster occurred at the end of the lessons, after their rewards of playtime, the kids are to gathered back inside to sign out, usually by a parent or guardian. This is a stern rule. Well Mikey on his way back was challenged by other boys not to break this rule. Antics ensued and Mikey is upset. I tried to tell him without exception that he couldn't just take off. Well he did. And fast. Fast forward and one of the teachers chased after him, got him to come back, sat him down, and asked him to apologize to me. I saw this unruly big kid just became one of the quietest, saddest boy I have seen.

Jing [calmly]: You're not in trouble. Tell teacher Mike what you told me outside.
Mikey [demurely]: My dad is never coming back he told me I can go off on my own since I own a bike and I don't have to get a signature because he won't be here.

Later after clearing this up, Jing shared with me her secret—"active listening" skills she learned while watching an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond.

I am currently seeking this specific episode. (And currently reading 101 Tips For Improving Children's Behaviour). Oh and if you're interested in volunteering please leave me a comment. We could sure use a helping hand.

Now I'm going to heat up my wonderful lunch that Sands cooked up for me. Hun your second cooking efforts are more colorful and yummmy! Thanks hun...
