Peking Acrobats Blues

VP (Vietpower, ie Alin, ie MD) came through for us, scoring us primo seatings to a grand night out at the San Jose Performance Arts Center last night. Why were we (Sandy+me) there? Oh to watch the Peking Acrobats, of course.

Before checking in to the Peking Acrobats, we made a dinner stop at E&O Trading Company in downtown San Jose. A few weeks ago on our way to the Melting Pot we noticed this quaint restaurant with a name more like an investment company than a 4+ star restaurant (according to Citysearch.)

E&O Trading Co. is basically an asian fusion place. Their menu you can download and view for yourself off of the website I provided above. I read through it and came up with these choices with the priority of getting the most varied foods out there without spending a lot of money. This is what we got in order:

  • Salt & Pepper calamari
  • Ginger mushroom satay
  • Tomato onion naan
  • Hardwood grilled rib eye steak (Big Plates)

Sandy and myself both really liked the steak as well as the calamari. Can't go wrong there. The ginger mushroom was tasty although I could eat about three of those orders. The naan in the words of Sands were like mini-pizza, although you could definitely still taste the naan. Our hush-hush drinks were: + hers: Mango mojito cocktail + his: India pale ale. Folks the main entreé—called Big Plates—are ideal to share for a couple if you ordered what I ordered above. It will fill you up. Believe me.

Main Course: Peking Acrobats To Go Sir!

However the main course to me was still getting onto the main entertainment for the night: the Peking Acrobats. Sadly my ideas of Chinese acrobats comes from high-wire films like Hidden Dragon, Crounching Tiger, etc.

When we arrived we were ushered to the front row (1st row Pit A seats 1& 2)—really we can't get any closer for fear of hitting the stage. For the next 90 minutes or so (there is an intermission in between) the audience were wowed and oohed to spectacular stunts: grace, power, silliness. That's right these young performers from China (14-24 years of age) mixed it up pretty well, egging the audience on with their own style of silliness and comedy. Sandy and myself along with the few people in the 1st row even got in on the act. At one point they tossed me a basketball and wanted me to pass it up to the one guy so he can catch it with a stick in his mouth. And later on they handed Sandy (et al.) a metal rod to let the audience know that the rod was indeed a metal before one guy bend it, with his neck.

If you get a chance to go watch this please do. You will be amazed at the skills it takes to perform what these kids performed. Thank you Alin. We owe you big time!

Alright Sandy is on her way to visit her sister Wendy and parents in Hayward and I have a few hours to kill before the Geckos 2nd hoops game tonight. I am excited and it is such a wonderful Easter Sunday. May you spend today with your loved ones and give grace and thanks to those you love. And don't forget to give thanks to our Lord.
