While I would like to say that the video night/open discussion on gender communication last Sat. night went relatively smoothly, the ending of it didn't. What happened was that at around midnight, after walking some friends to their cars, a caravan of police cars rushed into the corner street where I live in Sunnyvale. Something was happening. What turned out to be a night of watching that 70's show-style video flashback were now becoming an episode in "Cops", or a scene from Crash. All happening in front of my house.

So the cops rushed out of their police cars, about seven of them. One guy pulled his standard issued maglite™, proceeded to locate the suspect's house. He then led the charge with the rest of the officers following behind him, in a single file line. Somewhere in the middle was another officer with his canine dog in tow. Something was definitely happening.

Allen, Scott, Derek, and myself lined up behind the front yard fences watching. For what? We don't know. Who cares?!? Something is going down. Two officers flanked around the suspect's house while the rest gingerly walked up to the front door. They must have knocked because the suspects opened the door and all the officers disappeared inside the house. Ten minutes later they all came out and quietly walked back into their cars and speeded away. The suspect's house shut their lights and...well that was it.

This morning I read that one of my friend in LBC had his car vandalized. While lamenting the state of his car, what I found refreshing and encouraging was his attitude through it all. What I found encouraging was that he tried to understand on what compelled people to turn to crime. That is so awesome. And while it would be easy for me to pass judgement and worry—among a number of other things—about the safety of my neighborhood as a result of what ensued on Sat. night I think one thing I CAN do is pray for that house.

Who says Sunnyvale is without its share of excitement and adventure...
